Three gorgeous works illustrate three different ways that music can tell a story. Schicksalslied is a brief but powerful exploration of blissful spirit and mortal suffering. Poulenc’s Gloria depicts a joyous and surprisingly vivacious celebration of faith, and Rimsky-Korsakov described his musical fantasy narrative as “a kaleidescope of fairy-tale images.”
